Twisted Tales of the Shelf: Sending History Books to a New Generation

The “twisted vintage” philosophy is all about the journey of old objects—and sometimes, those objects are literally maps to adventure! This week, I boxed up and shipped out a special piece of history: a 1980 copy of the Handbook of Treasure Signs and Symbols by Mary Carson.

As a metal detectorist, this book wasn’t just a book; it was a fascinating deep dive into the world of coded markers left by miners, trappers, and maybe even treasure hunters of the past. Flipping through its pages, full of cryptic sketches and regional codes, was like holding a key to the stories buried right beneath our feet.

My twist on this book isn’t in restoring the paper or cover—it’s in ensuring its knowledge lives on. While I’ve moved it on to a new owner via eBay, I feel good knowing that those old codes and symbols are now in the hands of someone new who might just use them to uncover the next great find. It’s all about passing the hunt forward.
